The Back-Flow Rain (2021) is a Chinese short film that takes its name from a legend: in the mythical city of Sa, a back-flow rain falls from the ground upward toward the sky every summer solstice. The girl's parents once searched for this phenomenon when they were young — and never found it. Now her mother has vanished, leaving the ruins of a broken marriage and a single clue: an anthology of writings by Xiao Hong, a pioneering feminist author of modern Chinese literature. The girl sets out on a journey to find her mother, following the thread of the book and the legend into a world where the line between the real and the mythic becomes increasingly fluid. Winner — Best Female Student Director, Cannes Indie Shorts Awards 2022. Official Selection — St Andrews Film Festival. Mandarin Chinese with Subtitles. Free with ads.
