A Page of Madness

Rated 7.3/10 on IMDb. Screenplay by Nobel laureate Yasunari Kawabata. Co-photographed by Eiji Tsuburaya — the man who later created Godzilla. An ex-sailor takes a job as a janitor at a mental asylum to be near his wife, who has been committed there. Thought lost for 45 years, it was rediscovered by director Teinosuke Kinugasa in his shed in 1971 — and remains one of the most visually radical films ever made. No intertitles, no dialogue — a silent, wordless plunge into guilt, madness, and fractured reality. A landmark of Japanese avant-garde cinema. Free with ads.
