THE SUNSHINE is a poignant docu-drama set against the backdrop of a Florida fishing town confronting its way of life disappearing in the looming shadow of climate change. The film intertwines the narratives of Jack Harris and Charly Tucker—two unlikely companions that form an unbreakable bond. Jack Harris, a fisherman striving to measure up to his ailing father, Cap’n Joe, is determined to become his own captain. Building his own boat, a seventy-five-foot longline fishing trawler symbolizes his quest for freedom from land-bound troubles and allows him to fulfill what he thinks is his purpose: to be a fisherman. The boat he builds represents his escape from his father's unrealistic expectations and the troublesome emotions that come with interpersonal relationships. Meanwhile, Charly Tucker, the spirited teenage daughter of Jack’s friend lost at sea, grapples with her emerging gender identity, her mother’s devastating opioid addiction, and the grief over her father’s death. She finds refuge from her relentlessly changing world by helping Jack to build his boat—which she dubs The Sunshine. Together, they place their hopes in the boat and the escape it promises from their life on land. However, their dreams demand more financial resources than they can muster through small-time inshore fishing. Enter Lindsay, a smooth operator from Jack’s past, with a lucrative proposition to crew aboard his recently acquired fixer-upper boat, The Sea King. While working with Lindsay brings in the necessary funds, the partnership gradually erodes Jack’s values and devastates Charly’s father-figure hero worship for him. When they’re finally able to launch The Sunshine, it’s a hollow victory overshadowed by Jack’s moral sacrifices and Cap’n Joe’s suffering a stroke. When a hurricane threatens the community, Jack desperately attempts to make The Sunshine worth something by taking her into the storm with the plan to get the insurance payout should it sink. But his plan is undone when he finds Charly as a stowaway, leading to a harrowing confrontation with the storm and their inner demons. In the eye of the storm, Charly is forced to face her fear of the unknown and the awesomeness of change. Her bravery saves them, but they are never the same again. While Charly doubles her efforts in school to find real-world solutions to climate change, Jack is forced to ask why he was willing to give up The Sunshine completely. The freedom he held so dear was not the escape he hoped for. He instead learns to make a different choice: rather than escape, he must be present with those he loves.
