American Yokai

After witnessing her Japanese father’s apparent suicide, Kaede Takeshita and her and her brother Kenzo are thrust into a tiny town in rural Vermont where their white mother Lee is determined to start afresh. There, Kaede struggles to acclimate, grappling with grief, isolation, racism, body dysmorphia, and the sudden onset of visions upon touching certain objects. Haunted by a Specter and bombarded with secrets told from the point of view of these objects, Kaede realizes the spirits are trying to tell her something about her father’s death, and her newfound ability. Her gift/curse originates from Shinto priestesses in her ancestral line, and with it she has the power to awaken and embolden latent spirits. Kaede’s presence in this community that's filled with secrets, ancient feuds, and hidden struggles stirs up some old and very angry entities. The most corrupted of these spirits evolve into YOKAI — monsters who wreak karmic violence on the humans who have displeased them. As these American Yokai begin their rampage of vengeance on Kaede’s community, it will be up to her to uncover the root of each Yokai’s pain and find a way to make things right, as the Yokai who killed her father hides in plain sight aims to claim her as well.
